About Rust & Stars

I am Remko Smits, the photographer behind Rust & Stars, based in the south of the Netherlands. Photography is how I slow things down and pay attention to what remains when everything else is quiet.

My work moves between forgotten places, open landscapes, and night skies — drawn to rust, weathered surfaces, and vast stillness. Rather than documenting reality, I shape atmosphere through light, contrast, and restraint.

Alongside places and structures, I explore pet photography. Animals bring an honest presence into the frame — unguarded, physical, and quietly expressive — approached with the same attention I give to space and form.

Each image leaves room for interpretation, inviting you to pause and look closer.
